It’s that time!!  Hot weather is beginning! That means vacations, beaches and sun along with light clothing like tank tops, shorts tight summer dresses and bathing suits! Yet inevitably, every year, we wish we had begun to diet and exercise earlier in the spring because now we are not ready! Our tummies are not beach-body ready! Sure, we talked about it, but never did anything about it. Every year it’s the same.

We all want that flat stomach and maybe even a coveted 6 pack. However, that is something typically only the people with the smallest fat percentage can achieve. A flat, trimmed stomach is much more attainable than definition. Below are some tips to help you get started today, in time for the beach and pool outfits!

Watch how much you are Eating

This does not mean you have to follow a diet. Simply have slightly less than you would normally have, or use a smaller plate to trick your brain into thinking you have had the same full amount.

Avoid Soft Drinks

By simply cutting out soft drinks, you will lessen your calorie consumption dramatically! Alcohol is a culprit as well, so either cut it out completely, or at least cut back as much as you can. Make water more palatable by adding a few fresh lemon or lime slices, or freeze some grapes to use as ice cubes, then eat them when they are thawed. Fiber, flavor and water all in one glass! What’s not to love? Be sure to use plenty of ice on hot days to make it even more appealing.

Avoid Gastrointestinal Distress

Many times, people become quite gassy after consuming legumes and beans and tend to avoid them, however it is found that the more acclimated your body gets to these products, the less gas will actually be produced. Soft drinks will also cause gassiness, as will alcoholic drinks and greasy food. Add some Greek yogurt to your diet for added protein and beneficial bacteria, which are known to help gastrointestinal health.

Drink Plenty of Water

This simply cannot be stressed enough. Water will help you feel fuller, hydrate all of your body’s cells prompting optimal health and flushing out toxins and waste. By adding natural, zero calorie flavorings such as citrus fruits, you will receive the double benefit of fiber and vitamins with the cleansing power of the universal solvent (water, of course!).

Move, Move, Move!

Take advantage of the beautiful and long evenings. Take a nice walk with friends or your dog on a warm summer evening. Walking directly after eating also helps speed up digestion which is extremely beneficial.

Limit your Simple Carbohydrates

Try eating less bread, pasta and rice. Sweet fruits have a lot of carbohydrates but are the complex variety. Always choose complex carbs over simple carbs when you can. Choose brown rice over white, whole grain bread over white, et cetera. “White” foods typically have the outer germ layer removed, which is where most of the fiber and nutrients is stored. When you want a potato, try sweet potato instead as it has many more health benefits than yellow or white potatoes.

Eat a Lot of Greens, Especially Raw

During the summer, replace sandwiches with big beautiful raw vegetable salads. But remember, just because you are having a salad does not mean you can load it with fattening salad dressing. Instead, whisk some olive oil and lemon juice together to make a quick vinaigrette. Top your salad with lean meats, a boiled egg and a touch of shredded cheese for calcium. You won’t be hungry with a big, protein-full salad!

Try to do an Ab Workout 3 Times per Week

The ultimate goal may be a 6 pack, but that is not the focus of this article. Instead, focus on developing the abdominals’ and getting rid of excess belly fat. By incorporating an ab workout with cardio, you will torch fat along with toning those muscles!
