Homemade Carpet Freshener

Homemade Carpet Freshener

If you love using carpet freshener on your carpets when you vacuum, you’re going to love this carpet freshener recipe. When I first decided to test this out, I wasn’t quite sure how it would turn out, but I gotta admit, I absolutely love this. Aside from freshening the carpets, my brain is telling me that it may also help to control ants and other crawling insects as this recipe calls for bay leaves, cinnamon, and borax. All of which are natural ingredients to help control those pesky, crawling critters.

 What You’ll Need:

2 cups baking soda

1 cup borax

6 whole dried bay leaves

2 cinnamon sticks

1 tbs. whole cloves

Mix It Up:

Step 1 – Measure and pour baking soda into a bowl.

Step 2 – Measure and pour borax into bowl with baking soda.

Step 3 – Drop in bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves. Toss.

Step 4 – Add 1 cup of mixture into a blender or food processor and blend well. Continue this procedure until entire mix has been blended.

Step 5 – Pour into a glass jar or plastic container with a lid or a plastic zip lock bag.

To use, sprinkle on carpets and let sit for at least 15 minutes. I actually allow mine to sit overnight and then vacuum as normal.

For my container, I had my hubby poke holes into the lid of one of my recycled, glass spaghetti jars. Another method I used was to pour the carpet freshener into a plastic Ziploc bag. When I was ready to use it, I grabbed a small tea strainer to use as my sprinkler to sprinkle the carpet freshener over the carpets. You may find that you have some bits that are too large to fit through the holes. Guess what? You can just toss them onto the carpet. You’re going to vacuum it up anyway, right?

I hope you enjoy this homemade carpet freshener recipe. If you try this or any of my recipes, please let me know how it worked for you. Also, I’m always looking for new recipes, so if you have any you’d like to share, please feel free to do so.

  • The parmesan cheese grater is a great idea for sprinkling.  I thought I might try my flour sifter (i have the kind where you shake from side to side).
    Happy Cleaning!
  • What about pet urine smells from carpets.  I have a little dog who even though I take him out several times a day still goes on the carpet. I’m tired of buying expensive products from store that only work for a short time or not at all.
  • Nice recipe. Just make sure that you vacuum thoroughly. Most people do not. If too much of this mixture is left on the carpet it can cause problems when having it cleaned. Not a big deal but it can wick up after cleaning and leave a hazy residue.
  • To sprinkle freshener on carpet i use a clean plastic jar of grated Parmesan cheese . It comes with the holes.
By the way, i love this carpet freshener, thanks a lot and God bless you!!!!! I believe Pinky really has a brain!!! LOL.
