How long can you keep cosmetics

How long does it take for cosmetics to expire

Cosmetic tips about expiry datesDo you know how long you can use the foundation, and how long a lipstick stays good? What about your eyeliner and eyeshadow?

Like many other products, makeup and other beauty remedies are perishable and they only yield best results within a particular time frame. The easiest method to determine whether a product can still be used is to look up the label indicating the shelf-life of a particular product. On older products, however, the labels would have wore off with time.

And therefore, a list of general shelf lives of products will be useful. The shelf-life, of products, notwithstanding the label, also depends on the quality of the product, of the packaging and the manner in which the product has been stored (heat and exposure to sunlight promotes the deterioration of beauty products).

Liquid foundation generally have a shelf life of 1 to 1 ½ years after the package is opened. They spoil faster than oil-based foundations. In addition to these temporal benchmarks, it is important to also pay attention to the appearance of the product. Do not ever use a foundation with two distinguishable layers (an oily layer and a thicker layer, for example). Note the color and smell of your foundation. If the jar or tube has yellowish or caked edges, then it’s time to discard the foundation.

Powder and blush
The usual shelf life of powder and blush ranges from 1 to 2 years. Again, it is again very important that you take a good look at the product before attempting to use it – especially if it has been kept for a long time. Do not use powders or blush that has changed color or has strange clumps.

Lipstick and lip gloss
Lipsticks are generally good for a period of 1 to 2 years. Keep your lipstick in refrigerators to further extend its shelf life during hot, humid months. Lip gloss has a limited shelf life as the fluid is particularly prone to bacterial growth.

Eye pencils and lip pencils
Eye pencils and lip pencils have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years, due to sharpening and bacterial growth. Liquid eyeliners are perishable. As a general rule, it’s best to not use them 6 months from the date of opening.

Eyeshadow stays good for about 1 to 2 years, just like powder and blush. The shelf life of liquid eyeshadow is shorter, just as other liquid products. Note that these are often odorless.

Mascara has the shortest shelf life of all beauty products.  The longer the product is exposed to the air, the faster the decay. Therefore, try to limit the movement of the brush, and not to enter too deep each time (each movement brings air and its some impurities in the mascara).  Add water to an old mascara to make the substance liquid again

Depending on the quality of nail polish, it usually lasts for about 1 to 2 years. If the color is not nice and uniform and if there are two visible layers, then it’s time to get a new bottle of nail polish.

Creams and other beauty products
Creams and other beauty products also have a limited shelf life. Products meant for daily use such as body and facial creams are usually finished within their shelf lives, but not seasonal products like sunscreens. Do not use creams from last summer! Pay particular attention to products meant for the eyes. The skin around the eyes is very sensitive, therefore its best to exercise extra caution. Do not use if in doubt!

Extra tip
Do not date a product by the date of opening, but the date of purchase. It’s best to use a sticker on new products That is if you want to do it by the book
